Trees for Life Grove

Glasgow Glenmore Club: Trees for Life Grove

Back in December 2022, Mountaineering Scotland (MS) Access and Conservation Officer, Davie Black, talked at an indoor meet on the subject ‘Mountaineering and the Climate Crisis.’

One of the initiatives Davie spoke about was donating trees to be planted by the charity, Trees for Life, as a way of offsetting the environmental impact of journeys we make in our cars to go hillwalking – ‘a tree a trip’! He told us that MS had established a grove of trees to which we could contribute. After discussion, the committee decided that it would be a nice idea to establish our own Glenmore Club Grove.

When you donate through their website, Trees for Life plant saplings alongside other native trees. Most of the current planting is being done at Dundreggan, in Glenmoriston near Loch Ness. Trees for Life are opening a Rewilding Centre there early in 2023, which will facilitate access to the site. The saplings they plant will be grown from locally collected seed, and will be one of a number of species such as alder, aspen, birch, bird cherry, hazel, holly, rowan, Scots pine and willow. In time, these will transform into healthy young woodlands, helping to restore the Caledonian forest. As well as storing carbon, the habitat created will support wildlife such as red squirrel, black grouse, capercaillie, pine martenand golden eagle.

Please check out the Trees for Life website for more information about this inspiring charitable project.

To contribute please Plant a tree in the Glenmore Club Grove. It costs £6 to donate one tree.
